Carreg Naw Llyn - "Nine-lake Rock" - is not a very large boulder (seats two at a pinch!) nor is it particularly high (562m/1838') but it has a great view. Carreg Naw Llyn is visited by the Cambrian Way long-distance route from Cardiff to Conwy.
The panorama starts looking south-east to Claerwen reservoir, created in the 1950s, and the last part of the Elan valley water scheme to be built. On the skyline just to its right is Drygarn Fawr, highest point in the Elenydd mountains. The next lakes to come into view are the Teifi Pools, but before that, in the far distance, you can make out the Carmarthen Fan or Black Mountain. Of the Teifi Pools, you can see Llyn Teifi immediately above Carreg Naw Llyn, Llyn Hir and Llyn y Gorlan to its left, and Llyn Egnant to the left again. Llyn Bach is only just visible as a thin strip between Llyn Egnant and Llyn y Gorlan (try zooming in). As you pan right from Teifi Pools, the next lake is Llyn Fyrddon Fach - above whose far end is Plynlimon - then Llyn Fyrddon Fawr, which was enlarged by the building of a dam in the nineteenth century, to feed water via a 5-mile leat to the waterwheels of lead mines near Pontrhydygroes. Further right, and just before we return to Claerwen, is Llyn Du.
