Pen Glog-fawr 360° panorama (90Kb)

Pen Glog-fawr (394m/1288') is surrounded by the remains of lead-mining, but its peaceful grassy summit now seems a million miles from the heavy industry of 150 years ago. Two mines - Glog-fawr and Glog-fach - operated on this exposed hill south-east of Ysbyty Ystwyth. They were part of a mine complex centred on Pontrhydygroes, to which they were joined by a 1½ mile-long tunnel, the Level Fawr.

The panorama starts with the view east up the Marchnant valley; the hill on the skyline between the two forests is Trawsallt. Continuing clockwise the view reaches the edge of the Cambrian Mountains and opens out over the Teifi valley and Cors Caron nature reserve. To the right again is Hendre quarry, then we cross a watershed at the next forest and enter the Ystwyth valley, seen above the village of Ysbyty Ystwyth, and the nearby ruined buildings and waste rock tips of Glog-fawr and Glog-fach lead mines. Glog-fawr pond comes into view next, built as a reservoir for water to drive waterwheels and mine machinery; you can see Plynlimon (Pumlumon) on the skyline above the left edge of the pond.
