Lan-du Fawr (593m/1944') is a wild hill at the watershed of 3 major rivers - Claerddu (>Claerwen>Elan>Wye>Chepstow), Teifi (>Cardigan), and Ystwyth (>Aberystwyth). It has a trig pillar, hidden within a shelter cairn, and not surprisingly it has fantastic views, even though it isn't the highest point hereabouts - Carnyrhyrddod, 500m to the north-east, is a whole metre higher!
We start looking south-east to the top end of Claerwen reservoir, with Drygarn Fawr on the skyline to its right. We then turn north to the two small Fyrddon lakes. On the skyline to the right of these you can see the whaleback of Radnor forest. Continuing to the north, Plynlimon (Pumlumon) can be seen above the cairn. Round to the west the view is filled by the neighbouring hill of Trawsallt, and due south we reach the Teifi Pools, of which 4 are just visible - Llyn Egnant, Llyn Hir, Llyn y Gorlan and Llyn Teifi, from left to right. On a really clear day, there are distant views of Cader Idris, the Berwyn range, the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons, and the Carmarthen Fan. As we said - fantastic!
