Pistyll y Llyn panorama (47Kb)

Pistyll y Llyn is a long narrow cascade which tumbles over the northern escarpment of the Cambrian Mountains at the top of a beautiful north-facing valley, Cwmyrhaeadr. The view is taken from the top of the falls, and, if you approach this point from the south (which you must for your first visit) the view suddenly opens out at your feet as you arrive - a real "WOW!" moment.

In late July, you can sit amongst the heather with your legs dangling over the edge, feasting on whinberries, and enjoying the views of the Tarrens, Cadair Idris, the Arans and the Berwyn, with perhaps a peregrine screaming overhead. A path on your right leads down into the cwm so that you can get a better look at the pistyll. The eponymous llyn (Llyn Penrhaeadr) is a quarter-mile south of the viewpoint, and has been dammed so that most of its water now contributes, not to the falls, but to the Nant-y-moch hydro-electric scheme; the lake lies amidst a landscape blighted by the worst kind of conifer afforestation, and soon to be ravaged by 400' wind turbines.
