Sir George Stapledon 1882-1960
Pioneer ecologist, geneticist and agricultural improver, regarded as one of
the greatest agricultural scientists of the twentieth century.
In 1919, due to the generosity of The Rt. Hon. Lord Milford, Sir George Stapledon
was able to establish the Welsh Plant Breeding Station near Aberystwyth, where
he continued as Director until 1942. He was also a professor of Agriculture
in Aberystwyth.
Stapledon was at least partially responsible for the regeneration of rural
Britain during the inter-war years. His remarkable achievements in upland agricultural
improvement, through the reclamation and rehabilitation of mountain and hill
land, were largely responsible for the retention of the social, cultural and
economic infrastructure of the hills and uplands of today's Britain.
