We believe that the absence of any coherent official identity for the Cambrian Mountains has encouraged national and local authorities to perceive them as marginal and unimportant, and has left them prey to piecemeal development and exploitation. The cumulative effect of this will ultimately be the destruction of the special qualities which make the Cambrian Mountains unique.
The Cambrian Mountains Society, a charity (registration no. 1113037), therefore urges the designation of the Cambrian Mountains as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the inception of a Management Plan addressing the needs of the region as a whole. Pending that designation, the Society seeks to ensure that individual development and management decisions take the special but fragile character of the region fully into account.
As well as campaigning, the Society organises members’ events throughout the Cambrian Mountains area and online, as part of its commitment to its second object. If you have ideas for an event celebrating any aspect of the Cambrians, do get in touch and let us know.
In November 2006 the Cambrian Mountains Society published its flagship document: Cambrian Mountains – The Heart of Wales: Developing a Strategy for a Sustainable Future. You may download it below.

Sut rydyn ni’n rhoi statws cyfartal i’r Gymraeg a’r Saesneg
The Society is committed to giving equal status to Welsh and English. Its website will be presented in Welsh and English as resources allow, and we will endeavour to translate materials received in only one language. However, where this is not possible, or appropriate, the information will be reproduced in the language in which it is received.
Cyflwynir y wybodaeth a gynhyrchir gan CMC yn Gymraeg a Saesneg os yn bosibl. Gwneir ymdrech i gyfieithu yr hyn a dderbyniwn mewn un iaith. Os na fydd hyn yn bosibl neu’n gymwys, bydd y wybodaeth yn cael ei atgynhyrchu yn yr iaith wreiddiol.
The Heart of Wales: Developing a Strategy for a Sustainable Future
The document outlines a vision for the future of the Cambrian Mountains, considers alternative ways of achieving this vision, and provides reasoned justification for the view that the creation of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is the most practical way forward.
