We believe that the absence of any coherent official identity for the Cambrian Mountains has encouraged national and local authorities to perceive them as marginal and unimportant, and has left them prey to piecemeal development and exploitation. The cumulative effect of this will ultimately be the destruction of the special qualities which make the Cambrian Mountains unique.
The Cambrian Mountains Society, a charity (registration no. 1113037), therefore urges the designation of the Cambrian Mountains as a National Landscape (formerly known as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), and the inception of a Management Plan addressing the needs of the region as a whole. Pending that designation, the Society seeks to ensure that individual development and management decisions take the special but fragile character of the region fully into account.
As well as campaigning, the Society organises projects, responds to consultations on any issue affecting the area, commissions reports, runs competitions and members’ events throughout the Cambrian Mountains area and online, as part of its commitment to its second object. The Cambrian Mountains Society was formed to:
- promote, for the benefit of local communities, and of the wider public, measures which will sustain or enhance the landscape, natural beauty, biodiversity, archaeology, scientific interest, and cultural heritage of the Cambrian Mountains;
- advance the education of the public in the landscape, natural beauty, biodiversity, archaeology, scientific nature, cultural heritage and geodiversity of the Cambrian Mountains.
We are not related and have no links to the Cambrian Mountains Initiative, a publicly funded organisation promoting tourism in the Cambrian Mountains. As part of this, the Cambrian Mountains Initiative have adopted the marketing slogan Area of Astounding Natural Beauty which misleads many people to believe that the Cambrian Mountains are legally protected as a designated landscape. The Society is committed to giving equal status to Welsh and English. Its website will be presented in Welsh and English as resources allow, and we will endeavour to translate materials received in only one language. However, where this is not possible, or appropriate, the information will be reproduced in the language in which it is received.
