Our new petition

We’re working with the South and West Wales Wildlife Trust and Friends of the Earth Cymru to promote a petition asking for a Senedd debate on stopping future development on peatlands, whether or not they are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs).

Why do we care so much about peat?  You can read all about it in our briefing note Why does Peat Matter

Many people imagine that areas as important as peatlands must already protected, but in fact the SSSI system was only ever intended to protect the very best examples of particular habitats. 50% of Wales’ peat is within one SSSI or another.  But “regular” peatlands, making up the other 50% (and storing 15% of all Wales’ captured carbon) are not.   With over 36% of all Wales’ peatland is now being targetted for development of renewable power stations and the associated infrastructure, we’re at grave risk of releasing all that carbon back into the atmostphere even through our efforts to emit less carbon in future.  This makes no sense!

You can read the petition in full and, if you agree, please sign it here.

And please tell your family, friends and colleagues too.  We’ve got 1150 signatures online already – but that means we need another 8,850 to get the Senedd to really focus on this enormous risk, before it’s too late!
