The Tower Meridian Quay 2015Developer Statkraft has applied for permission to build 12 turbines up to 180m (590ft) high, on the slopes of Pumlumon Fawr and Y Garn.  They’ve chosen the deceptively Cymraeg name for this Norwegian project, calling it Lluest y Gwynt.

The public has until 10 June 2026 to submit any response to the application.  If the development went ahead, it would transform the area from a haven of tranquillity and remoteness from human stress into an industrial park dwarfing anything nearby, or anywhere else in Wales.  The tallest building currently in Wales is the Tower on Meridian Quay in Swansea, shown here, which at a mere 107m is nowhere near the size of each individual turbine.

To read what the developer’s plans are in detail, you can see the application documents on the case portal run by Planning and Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW) at https://planningcasework.service.gov.wales/case/CAS-01278-X9Q8S0 .  As there are a LOT of documents already on this case, it may help to use the filters which let you select just the application documents, or just the responses other people have already put in (Interested Party Representations).

Remember too that this proposal is just the first to go forward in Ceredigion: developers Bute Energy, Belltown Power, EDF and Galileo Empower are already queuing up to start their own developments, some of which are even bigger, on sites from Talybont and Tre Taliesin, to Pontrhydfendigaid and south to Llynfair Clydogau and Pumsaint.  You can see a map showing all proposals known so far, prepared by Caru Teifi, here.  So if Lluest y Gwynt goes ahead, the chances are that a whole chain will spring up along the west face of the Cambrian Mountains since the presence of one set of turbines will degrade the landscape’s status making the rest of the region more suitable for more turbines.

We’ve prepared a note with some issues you might like to consider in preparing your response, which you can see here.  Of course, you aren’t limited to these points; there are many things in the application which merit comment.  And if you have any questions, do get in touch through the contact form.  We’ll do our best to respond.
