The temperate rainforests are some of Britain’s most important habitats even though only small areas remain.  Over the centuries the rainforest has deteriorated due to issues ranging from the planting of conifers, to the invasion of species such as Rhododendron ponticum, and over- or under- grazing by sheep and deer.

Cambrian-mountains-Cwm-DoethieThe decline has put stress on precious flora, especially lichens such as Pyrenula hibernica (blackberries and custard) and tree lungwort, birds including the pied flycatcher, redstart and wood warbler, and mammals including the lesser horseshoe bat, otter and dormouse.

The Celtic Rainforest project is attempting to rid four areas of Celtic Rainforest of invasive species and find ways of improving their management, for example by changing how the woods are grazed.  Three of those four areas are within the Cambrian Mountains, at Cwm Doethie, Cwm Elan and Cwm Einion.
