Wye Valley Walk waymarkThe spring is on its way, and so the time for intrepid walkers to get out and celebrate the vast open spaces of the Cambrian Mountains must be approaching too.  We’re kicking off with a walk led by Peter Foulkes around the ridge between the Elan reservoirs and Llangurig (hopefully avoiding any contact with the proposed wind power station at Rhiwlas, for which Bute filed a planning application on 23 December 2025).

Meet at the car park on the southern side of Llangurig at 10.15am meet for a 10.30 start.  It’ll be 11km / 7 miles including ascent of approximately 300m (1000 ft) so in total approximately a 4 hour walk.  Some of the terrain is very muddy so proper boots will be needed – and of course, for March in Mid-Wales, full waterproofs.  But if the weather is fine the ridge offers expansive views east and west.

A short road walk from the village leads to a gentle, but in places very muddy (and later conifered) climb up towards Pant Gwyn Hill, passing the ruins of Hafodlydan onto the skyline ridge separating the Gwy/Wye from the Elan.  Heading south along the ridge we’ll reach Leaving the village we have a short road walk before heading up the potentially very muddy tracks toward Pant gwyn Hill, later passing the ruins of Hafodlydan before entering a conifer plantation.  Turning south out of the plantation we walk the ‘skyline’ ridge in a southerly direction reaching the Bronze Age, arguably more ‘Modern Age’ cairn, of Carn-y-Groes-Cambrian-MountainsCarn y Groes.  Turning back on ourselves we then go down a subsidiary ridge, taking in another, less substantial, Bronze Age Cairn.  Shortly after we pick up the ‘Wye Valley Walk’ back to Llangurig but before we reach ‘home’ we pass the quite stunning Arts and Crafts house of Clochfaen and then back to the village.

No dogs on this walk please.
