The next Members’ walk is a joint one with Aberystwyth Ramblers, led by Dave Taylor and heading out into the hinterland beyond Pumlumon and Nant y Moch on 4 July.
This is an 18km (in “old money” -eleven miles) circular (or more accurately is it a ‘lollipop’?) walk in a fairly remote area just to the north of Pumlumon Fawr. From the start place a stony track leads to a footbridge over the Afon Hengwm from which a rough path takes us through, occasionally damp/boggy ground, the north side of the Hengwm valley. Eventually we reach a track which we take for about half a mile before arriving at Llyn Bugeilyn.
The track then goes north west, passing Llyn Cwm Byr before gaining the highest point of the walk at approximately 520m (1,700 feet). The track then leads us into the forestry plantation of Esgair Fford, after leaving which we walk south, ascending then descending into the Hyddgen valley. Then it’s a revisit to our outgoing bridge over the Hengwm followed by an uphill pull, over familiar ground, bringing us back to the starting point. Along the route we will pass, amongst other archaeological sites; a Bronze Age Hut Circle in the Hengwm, near Bugeilyn- ground in which Bronze Age Arrowheads have been found (but finding further ones may take some looking for!), and the shell of the former Gamekeeper’s house at the head of Llyn Bugeilyn. We may also get sight, fog and binoculars permitting, of Glyndwr’s Covenant Stones as we will be passing through/by the suggested site of the Battle of Hyddgen fought in 1401.
Using ‘Ramblers’ grading this walk is about grade B but for those not familiar with these grades it is a moderate to moderately hard walk and it is definitely a walk on which you should be wearing your waterproof boots.
The walk will start at 10.00am at the road edge near Maesnant (abandoned farm / ‘field center’), Grid Reference: – SN774.879; What3Words: – gallons.outlawing.hoped; Post Code SY23 3AG. There are ‘laybys’ in which you can park leading up to Maesnant.
Sheep may be encountered throughout the walk so no dogs please.
To book a place on this walk please contact Dave on 07831 735208. He may also be able to arrange car sharing from the Bwlch Nant yr Arian layby, leaving there at 09.15am.
