Our next outing, and the absolute last for this season, is a varied eight-mile (13km) circular walk on moorland tracks and lanes with two short, steep and rocky descents. The walk has good views over Elan’s Uplands and reservoirs – provided that the weather allows.

The walk starts with a steep ascent to Crugyn trig pillar (533m /1750 feet, old money) followed by a moorland path descending to Trehesglog and Rhydoldog.

Elan Valley descentThen its back up onto the whaleback ridge followed by a descent to the Garreg ddu reservoir via a path running alongside the Nant Dolfolau.  Then it’s a km stroll alongside the reservoir back to the parked cars. Then there is always the option of refreshments at the Elan Visitor Centre back down the valley.
