Our next outing, and the last for this season, is NOW (following the postponement due to bad weather) on Saturday 26 September.
The Hafod Estate, nestled in Cwmystwyth is one of the gems of the Cambrian Mountains. Created by Thomas Johnes during the 18th Century it is one of Europe’s finest examples of the Picturesque landscape. Sadly, the Mansion has been demolished but there are beautiful walking trails and woodlands as well as gorges and waterfalls to explore and enjoy. Also, the area is an SSSI site for wildlife and there is still evidence of the area’s rich history. Much conservation and restoration work has been made to the estate over the years by the Hafod Trust and NRW and now the National Trust.
Led by Dwynwen Belsey, this 5 mile walk will be taken at a relaxed pace to appreciate the diverse landscape and features on the estate. Although the walk will be on official tracks and paths, some of these are uneven and can be quite rough in places; overall the walk grade is moderate. The woodland areas have roots etc. to be aware of and there are steps. Dogs are allowed but must be under control at all times especially whilst visiting Mrs. Johnes’ garden and near Hawthorne Cottage and Middle Hill, where sheep are frequently present, in these local’s dogs must be on a lead.
The walk will leave the main car park, near Eglwys Newydd Church, on the B4574 (Grid Reference: SN768 736, what three words: bonfires.pinch.splint) at: 11 am and head down to Peiran Falls and then continue through woodland to the Chain Bridge. The walk will then proceed along the Gorge Walk to Dologau Bridge. From there we will take a detour to the Cavern along Nant Gau and return to Dologau bridge to continue walking along the Ystwyth River to the picnic site by the river for a picnic lunch (please don’t forget your sandwiches, cake, (prosecco?) etc. After lunch the walk will go through Mrs. Johnes’ Garden and continue to the former mansion site and then pass the pond and Hawthorne Cottage. After crossing the Middle Hill area the walk will continue to the site of Mariamne’s Garden and the Bedford Monument and return back to the car park.
Eglwys Newydd Church is very close to the Car Park and is well worth a visit as it has strong historical links with Thomas Johnes and the Hafod Mansion.
