Save our peatlands Fund

We’re working to protect the peatlands of the Cambrian Mountains and the rest of upland Wales from developers

Cambrian-Mountaims-peatland-Gors-LwydThe Cambrian Mountains hold most of the deep peat in Wales, other than Eryri.  Yet, as the region is not yet a designated landscape (National Landscape or AONB as they used to be known), it is being targeted for development for renewable energy with most of the proposed sites so far sited including important areas of peat.

The developers invariably claim they will not destroy irreplaceable peat; but past experience shows that with no effective enforcement, such promises are hollow.

Peat matters: it

  • stores carbon away from the atmosphere (4% of Wales land area, yet holding 30% of all our stored carbon);
  • holds water and slows storm run-off, helping to prevent flooding in the six major rivers which rise in these uplands;
  • prevents wildfires, as seen graphically from the pattern of burned and unburned areas left after the Elan Valley fire in April 2026; and
  • supports an amazing range of plants, insects and birds, helping to maintain Wales’ nature resilience in the face of climate change.

We’re asking the Senedd to debate banning development on peat as a matter of urgency.  You can sign our petition here.  Please help us get our message heard; your contribution could help pay for printing of leaflets, advertisements in the papers and holding public meetings to explain why building over peat makes the climate crisis worse, not better.

Soundscape Fund

A wide area array to study the resident and visiting birds in the Cambrian Mountains

curlewWe know the Cambrians has an important and diverse population of upland birds   – but we also know that we don’t know the full picture.  So, with the help of some amazing software and some very clever devices, we’re carrying out a study over 12 months to monitor exactly what’s here, where and what passes through in the course of migration.

The total cost per device is about £120 (including memory, batteries and customs duties, as we have to import them from the USA).

It’s a very large area we’re trying to cover! Please help us maximise our reach by sponsoring some extra devices.

Webinar donations

We do not charge for attending our webinar or watching the recordings, but we do appreciate a donation to help us continue to fund out activities for the benefit of local communities in the Cambrian Mountains and the wider public

Legacies

Gwnewch ddarpariaeth yn eich ewyllys ar gyfer Cymdeithas Mynyddoedd Cambria

Let your love for the Cambrian Mountains live on with a gift in your will.

Did you know that one of the most lasting ways you can protect the open spaces you love for all to enjoy for generations to come is with a gift in your will to the Cambrian Mountains Society? It’s really easy to do and won’t cost you anything now, but you will be helping to ensure a safer future for our uplands, commons, tracks and waterways. Just add the paragraph below to a new will or as a codicil to an existing will, filling in the sum or percentage:

“I leave to the Cambrian Mountains Society (registered charity no. 1113037) the sum of £[ ] or [ ]% of my residuary estate (whichever is the greater) free of tax and declare that the signature of the treasurer or other authorised officer of the Cambrian Mountains Society shall be sufficient discharge to my trustees for this legacy.”
