Cambrian-Mountainss-Caban-Coch-Reservoir

After a successfully spring-like start to the walking programme in March, Dwynwen will be taking the next outing up and around Caban Coch Reservoir in the Elan Valley.  Cambrian-Mountains-Caban-Coch-reservoirStarting at the Visitor Centre (where there is a charge for parking) at 10.30 am on 12 April, the route continues up to the Caban Coch Reservoir and up past the Nant y Gro Dam where the bouncing bombs were tested during World War 2 by Barnes Wallace, and then onto Ty’n y pant. This section does involve a steep climb of steep ascent of 600 feet in under half a mile near the beginning of the walk.

From there the walk will descend towards Erw Fawr and follow a mixture of quiet country lanes and woodland paths to the Elan Village. We will then follow an attractive part of the Elan river for a short section before returning back to the visitor’s centre.

The walk is 5.5 miles in total and gives fine views of  Caban Coch and Garreg Ddu Reservoirs, and the reward for making it up the hills is the distant sight of iconic Drygarn Fawr – the most recent of the high points in the Cambrians to be threatened with development of a wind farm.

Dogs: Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on this walk other than Assistance dogs.
