Esgair-Mwyn-Mine-Cambrian-Mountains

Neal will be leading the first Members’ walk of 2025 on 9 March, starting from the Teifi Inn at Ffair Rhos.   It was a fine day on the day he reconnoitred, as his photo of Esgair Mwyn Mine above shows, so there’s every reason to hope for a good day out.

The walk explores the Marchnant valley NE of Ffair Rhos. This area is littered with the     remains of the Ceredigion mining industry and the walk will visit the corrugated and rusty ruins of the once very lucrative Esgair Mwyn lead mine rediscovered in 1751 and worked intermittently right up until 1927 reaping huge profits for the owners during the 1750’s-1780’s era (£150k).

Cambrian-Mountains-Afon-MarchnantAfter crossing the Marchnant river we’ll loop around the crags of Craig y Fran to pick up the Pontrhydifendigaid to Devils Bridge Trail after passing the large marshy expanse of Rhos Tanchwarel, then heading west towards Ysbyty Ystwyth using minor lanes but bypassing the village and diverting across some lovely upland countryside passing more disused mine shafts

In all it’ll be 7 miles with 375m elevation gain.  Let Neal know if you’re planning to join the walk, on walks@cambrian-mountains.co.uk. And don’t forget, if you have a favourite walk you’d like to share with other Members, Neal is always on the lookout for leaders to take us somewhere new!
