cAMBRINA-MOUNTAINS-dINAS-FORTEleven members (twelve if you include Jess the Border Collie) congregated at Nant yr Arian on a sunny Autumnal morning, all kitted up (well, they all had walking boots on, apart from Jess) ready to breach the ramparts of Dinas Iron Age Hillfort.  In fact the majority of the twelve approached the top of the hill through the fort’s ‘gate’ rather than storming the grassy ramparts.

CMS Group Dinas Hill FortWe all, however, regrouped to celebrate lunch on the summit whilst taking in the wide views, including a glimpse of the uppermost, postulated, postglacial lake shoreline on Drosgol (see David James’ article discussing the geology of this in the latest edition of the CMS Journal).

The return route soon took in the rather odd, (cavernous!) CEGB / Statkraft structure just below the summit, which turns out to be a vent to prevent ‘hammer’ damage as water rushes down the pipe from Nant y Moch reservoir on its way, ultimately, to Rheidol power station (thanks to Richard for the technical info).

Cambrian-mountains-Track-down-from-DinasThe victorious retreat to Nant yr Arian, and afternoon refreshments, took in a ‘Molinia bash’ fortunately through which a kindly landowner had provided a quad track, this being far easier than the adjacent, somewhat rutted, Public Right of Way.
