Lluest-Pen-Rhiw-Cmabrian-Mountains

The June members’ walk will take place on 15 June, led by Judy Gore.   It’ll be a circular upland walk of 7 miles with outstanding views, starting from Gilfach  Nature Reserve at around 10 am.  The walk heads west on a section of the Monks Trod below the ridge of Moelfryn and past the ruined Medieval Long Hut of Lluest-Pen-Rhiw to eventually reach a minor road for a short stretch before taking the byway towards Rhayader passing the striking quartz standing stone of Maengwyngweddw (White Widows Stone). There’s an optional detour to Maen Serth further along the byway.  A final descent through a curved valley past Cwmcoch Farm leads back towards the Nature Reserve on a minor road.

Dogs are welcome.  Please let Judy know in advance if you intend to come, on the telephone number given in the Members’ email.  Judy is one of our ‘offline only’ members – which perhaps contributes to her excellent appreciation and knowledge of the outdoors!

Monks-Trod-Cambrian-MountainsFor those who thought this post might have something to do with our ongoing campaign to dissuade Powys County Council from ‘engineering’ a section of the Monks Trod to make it more accessible by trail bikes, rest assured the work continues.  We’ll be hosting David Chadwick, MP for Brecon & Radnorshire & Cwm Tawe, to visit the affected stretch in July and see for himself the Monks-Trod-ruts-Cambrian-Mountainsdamage irresponsible offroaders (who unfortunately make up a significant number of those whose recreation involves taking petrol engines into the uplands) cause to the surrounding frail peatlands.
